Have you ever felt like your prayers were just words—like you were speaking into the air but not really connecting with God? I’ve been there. But I discovered something that changed my prayer life: prayer isn’t about getting the words right; it’s about getting the relationship right.
Growing up, I thought prayer was just a Christian duty, something we do before meals or bedtime. But over time, I realized that prayer is an invitation to connect with God, to share my heart, and to listen for His voice. That realization didn’t happen overnight, and I’ll be the first to admit—I’m not an expert in prayer. I’m still learning, just like you. I don’t have all the answers, but I can share what’s helped me move from routine prayer to real, meaningful connection with God.
Last week, we explored Finding Solitude with God: 5 Steps to Building a Powerful Prayer Life, where we talked about creating space for prayer, removing distractions, and following Jesus’ example of seeking solitude. If you haven’t read it yet, I encourage you to go back and check it out—it lays the foundation for today’s discussion. Now, let’s take the next step: how do we move from simply saying prayers to experiencing a deeper relationship with God through prayer?
1. Honest, Heartfelt Prayer Over Performance
Many of us think we have to come to God with perfect words, but that’s not true. Jesus showed us that prayer is about honesty, not performance. On the night before His crucifixion, Jesus withdrew to the Garden of Gethsemane and prayed with deep anguish.
Luke 22:41-44 (NIV) tells us:
“He withdrew about a stone’s throw beyond them, knelt down and prayed, ‘Father, if you are willing, take this cup from me; yet not my will, but yours be done.’ An angel from heaven appeared to him and strengthened him. And being in anguish, he prayed more earnestly, and his sweat was like drops of blood falling to the ground.”
This was Jesus—the Son of God—pouring out His raw emotions to the Father. He didn’t recite polished phrases; He prayed from the depths of His soul. That’s the kind of prayer God desires from us—real, unfiltered, and from the heart.
If you ever struggle with what to say, try this: be honest. Tell God exactly how you feel, even if you’re frustrated, confused, or unsure. He can handle it.
2. Keeping Prayer Alive and Engaging
Last week, we talked about setting aside time for prayer, but what happens when your prayers start to feel repetitive or dry? Instead of getting discouraged, try refreshing your approach.
Here are some ways to make prayer more engaging:
• Pray while walking – Turn a simple walk into a conversation with God.
• Journal your prayers – Writing them down helps you focus and see how God answers over time.
• Pray out loud – Speaking your prayers can make them feel more personal and real.
• Use music – Worship songs can inspire heartfelt prayer.
Prayer isn’t meant to be robotic—it’s meant to be alive, intimate, and personal. If your routine feels stale, switch it up!
3. Letting Go of Distractions and Busyness
We live in a world filled with constant noise—notifications, emails, endless to-do lists. If we’re not careful, these distractions can crowd out time with God. Jesus often stepped away from the noise to be alone with the Father, and we should too.
Ask yourself: What do I need to step away from to give God my full attention? Maybe it’s putting your phone on silent, taking a break from social media, or finding a quiet place where you won’t be interrupted.
If you’re looking for practical ways to cultivate solitude with God, I encourage you to revisit Finding Solitude with God from last week. It offers simple steps to remove distractions and create intentional space for prayer.
4. Praying Scripture to Strengthen Your Faith
There are moments when we don’t know what to pray. In those times, praying Scripture helps align our hearts with God’s truth.
For example, if you’re feeling anxious, you might pray Psalm 23:
“Lord, You are my Shepherd; I have everything I need. Even when I walk through the darkest valley, I know You are with me.”
Praying Scripture turns God’s promises into personal prayers. It reminds us of His presence, His faithfulness, and His peace. Next time you pray, try turning a verse into a personal conversation with God.
5. Exploring Different Types of Prayer
If you want to deepen your prayer life, try different styles of prayer.
• Intercessory Prayer – Praying for others strengthens our faith and love for people.
• Meditative Prayer – Reflecting quietly on Scripture helps us hear God’s voice.
• Praise & Thanksgiving – Beginning with gratitude shifts our focus from worries to worship.
Mixing up your prayer routine helps keep your connection with God fresh and meaningful.
Prayer That Transforms
If prayer has ever felt like a routine for you, I hope this encourages you to seek something deeper. Prayer isn’t about performance, perfect words, or a rigid schedule—it’s about real relationship. The more you open your heart to God, the more you’ll experience His peace, guidance, and presence in your life.
I may not have all the answers, but I do know this: God hears every prayer. He is closer than we think.

Instructions: Find the following words hidden in the puzzle below. They may be placed horizontally, vertically, or diagonally.
Heavenly Father, stir within us a hunger for Your presence, that our prayers may become more than words but a living, breathing connection with You. Teach us to seek You with honesty, to listen with expectation, and to trust that You are near, even in silence. Break down every barrier that keeps us from deeper intimacy with You, and fill our hearts with the joy of knowing You more each day. May our prayers be a place of transformation, where we are strengthened, renewed, and drawn closer to Your unfailing love. Amen.
