“Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.” Proverbs 4:23 (NIV)

The request arrives just as you sit down with your family. Someone needs another favor, and you know what saying yes will cost. Still, saying no feels uncomfortable, especially when you want your life to reflect Jesus.

We began September by exploring love that seeks another person’s good. Last week, we considered forgiveness that releases offense without automatically restoring trust. Now comes a question many believers carry: If I am called to love sacrificially, when is setting a limit faithful?

Love Takes Its Shape From Jesus

Jesus shows us a love that is compassionate and faithful to the Father. Following Him means allowing His character to shape our decisions, even when someone would prefer a different answer.

Sometimes that means accepting an inconvenient request. Love interrupts our schedules and challenges our preferences. Discomfort alone does not mean we need a boundary.

At other times, agreeing repeatedly allows dishonesty to continue, neglects responsibilities God has entrusted to us, or promises more than we can faithfully give. A loving response must take those realities seriously.

Luke records Jesus’ response amid growing demands: “But Jesus often withdrew to lonely places and prayed.” (Luke 5:16, NIV) His example invites us to bring people’s needs before the Father without letting every expectation determine our response.

Guard Your Heart Without Closing It

Proverbs 4 places guarding the heart within a father’s instruction to pursue wisdom and turn away from evil. The concern goes beyond protecting our feelings to the inner life that shapes our speech, choices, and conduct.

That includes examining what is happening within us. We can establish a sensible limit while enjoying another person’s disappointment. We can also keep saying yes while resentment grows beneath our helpfulness.

Discernment asks us to examine the relationship’s pattern and our own motives. Am I protecting a responsibility, or avoiding an uncomfortable act of love? Am I allowing someone’s displeasure to govern my decisions? Do I want this person’s good, even if they misunderstand me?

A boundary can express what we can offer or what behavior we will participate in. It leaves room for compassion while clarifying our responsibilities.

Help That Makes Room for Responsibility

Paul writes, “Bear one another’s burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ.” (Galatians 6:2, NKJV) He also reminds believers, “For each one shall bear his own load.” (Galatians 6:5, NKJV)

The surrounding passage emphasizes gentle restoration and humble self-examination. Mutual care and personal accountability belong in the same Christian community.

We need that balance when helping becomes an effort to prevent someone from facing every consequence. Paying another bill, covering another commitment, or making another excuse may bring relief while leaving the underlying pattern untouched.

Circumstances matter. Illness, grief, disability, or crisis may call for sustained, costly help. Discernment requires patient attention to what a person can actually carry.

With a friend who repeatedly abandons commitments, you might offer help planning the next step while declining to take over again. With church responsibilities, you might explain that an additional role would prevent you from honoring existing commitments.

As we explored last week, forgiveness can remain sincere while access changes. Releasing vengeance does not require returning to an arrangement that continues to cause harm. Wise counsel can help us recognize what needs to change.

Let Your Next Step Hold Grace and Truth

“Rather, speaking the truth in love, we are to grow up in every way into him who is the head, into Christ.” (Ephesians 4:15, ESV)

Paul connects loving truthfulness with the church’s maturity. That gives our difficult conversations a purpose: becoming more like Jesus together.

A clear response might sound like this: “I care about you, and I can help for an hour on Saturday. I cannot take responsibility for the whole project.”

Speak respectfully, keep your commitment, and allow the other person to have feelings you cannot resolve for them. Their disappointment deserves compassion, but it does not automatically mean your decision was wrong.

Scripture also addresses our tone: “A gentle answer turns away wrath, But a harsh word stirs up anger.” (Proverbs 15:1, NASB) Gentleness helps us communicate clearly without turning a necessary limit into an attack.

Before you read, consider this…

Some hurts are difficult to release because letting go can feel as though we are saying what happened was acceptable. But what if holding on to the offense is costing you more than it is costing the person who hurt you? Where does forgiveness end and wisdom begin?

“Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.” Ephesians 4:32 (NIV)

Some wounds disappear quickly. Others remain attached to a name, a conversation, a betrayal, or a moment we wish had never happened. We may sincerely love God and still discover that remembering what someone did can awaken anger all over again.

That is where forgiveness becomes more than a Christian ideal. It becomes a decision about what will continue to occupy our hearts.

Sometimes the hardest offenses come from people we expected to love us well: a spouse, parent, sibling, friend, coworker, or fellow believer. The closer the relationship, the deeper the disappointment can reach. Scripture never asks us to deny that reality. Instead, God invites us to deal with the wound without letting it determine who we become.

Forgiveness Begins With What God Has Given Us

Paul’s instruction in Ephesians 4:32 was written to believers learning how their new life in Christ should reshape their relationships. Notice the standard: “just as in Christ God forgave you.” Christian forgiveness does not begin with whether another person deserves mercy. It begins with remembering the mercy we have received.

Jesus made this unmistakable in the parable of the unforgiving servant. After being released from an enormous debt, the servant refused mercy to someone who owed him far less (Matthew 18:23–35, NIV). Jesus exposed the contradiction of receiving grace while refusing to extend it.

That does not make another person’s wrongdoing insignificant. Forgiveness does not require calling evil good, pretending the wound did not matter, or denying consequences. It means refusing to make another person’s debt the permanent possession of your heart.

Paul writes, “Forgive as the Lord forgave you” (Colossians 3:13, NIV). We forgive from grace received, not because the pain was imaginary.

Releasing the Right to Get Even

One reason offense holds us so tightly is that we want the scales balanced. We replay conversations, rehearse what should have been said, or imagine the day the other person finally understands what they caused.

Scripture gives us another way. Romans 12:19 says, “Do not take revenge… ‘It is mine to avenge; I will repay,’ says the Lord” (NIV). Forgiveness releases personal vengeance into God’s hands. We surrender our demand to settle the account ourselves.

This can be difficult because releasing revenge may feel like surrendering justice. It is not. It is acknowledging that God is a better judge than we are.

You may still need to address wrongdoing, establish consequences, seek wise counsel, or create distance. But you can do those things without allowing bitterness to become your companion. Forgiveness says, “God, I will not spend my life collecting this debt. I place it in Your hands.”

Forgiveness Is Not the Same as Trust

This distinction matters enormously. One person can offer forgiveness. Reconciliation requires participation from both. Trust, once damaged, normally requires truthfulness, repentance, changed behavior, and time.

Jesus Himself connected relational repair with honest confrontation. “If your brother or sister sins against you, rebuke them; and if they repent, forgive them” (Luke 17:3, NIV). Biblical love does not require pretending nothing happened. Grace and truth belong together.

You can forgive someone and still recognize that restoring the relationship would be unwise today. You can release resentment while maintaining a necessary boundary. You can pray for someone without immediately giving that person the same access they once had.

That is not failed forgiveness. Sometimes it is wisdom.

Freedom Happens Inside You First

Unforgiveness promises protection, but over time it can keep us emotionally connected to the very injury we want to escape. The person may have moved on while we continue carrying the conversation.

Hebrews 12:15 warns believers to see that “no bitter root grows up to cause trouble” (NIV). Bitterness rarely stays neatly contained. It can influence how we interpret other people, how quickly we become defensive, and how freely we love.

Forgiveness interrupts that cycle. It does not rewrite yesterday. It changes what yesterday is allowed to control today.

Perhaps there is a name you have avoided bringing honestly before God. Your practical step this week is simple: name the offense in prayer, tell God truthfully what it cost you, and consciously release your right to revenge. You may need to repeat that surrender when the memory returns. Forgiveness can be a decisive choice followed by many faithful reminders of that choice.

Freedom does not mean forgetting. It means the offense no longer gets to rule your heart.

YOUR FAITH FOCUS

Before you read, consider this…

It is easy to say we love someone when the relationship is comfortable, and the affection is mutual. But what happens to our love when another person becomes difficult, disappointing, inconvenient, or costly? The clearest measure of our love is revealed precisely when loving someone asks something of us.

“A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another.” — John 13:34 (NIV)

Love is easy to admire when it is expressed beautifully. It is harder to practice when someone disappoints us, interrupts our plans, needs more patience than we expected, or cannot give us anything in return.

Jesus did not merely speak about love. He gave His disciples a standard they could see: “As I have loved you.” That changes the question from “Do I feel loving?” to “Does the way I treat this person resemble Christ?”

Love Has a Face

John 13 places Jesus’ command in a remarkable setting. Earlier that evening, He washed His disciples’ feet. He served men who would soon scatter, fail Him, and, in Judas’ case, betray Him. Christlike love was not sentimental affection. It took the posture of a servant.

Jesus explained His mission plainly: “For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve” (Mark 10:45, NIV). His love moved toward people and sought their good.

That matters because we can sincerely care about someone while still allowing convenience to govern our actions. We love our spouse, children, friends, church family, and coworkers, yet become impatient when loving them requires listening, sacrificing time, forgiving an interruption, or setting aside our preferences.

Jesus invites us beyond affectionate intentions. Love becomes visible when another person’s good matters enough to cost us something.

Love Does Not Keep Score

Sacrificial love does not mean becoming passive, ignoring harmful behavior, or saying yes to every request. Jesus loved perfectly, yet He also spoke truth, confronted sin, withdrew to pray, and refused to be controlled by people’s expectations.

Biblical love has strength in it. Paul wrote that love “is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs” (1 Corinthians 13:5, NIV). That description reaches into ordinary relationships where scorekeeping quietly grows.

We remember who apologized last, who called first, who failed to help, who received more than they gave. Before long, love can become a transaction: I will give when you deserve it.

But God’s love toward us began somewhere entirely different. Romans 5:8 says, “While we were still sinners, Christ died for us” (NIV). Grace moved first.

This does not require pretending wounds do not matter. It means our model for love is not another person’s performance. It is Jesus.

The Small Places Where Love Costs

Most of us will not be asked to demonstrate love through one dramatic sacrifice today. More likely, Christlike love will appear in a dozen small decisions no one applauds.

It may mean listening without preparing your rebuttal, calling someone who is lonely, giving your full attention when you would rather look at your phone, speaking truth kindly instead of avoiding an uncomfortable conversation, and helping without announcing it.

Philippians 2:4 instructs believers, “not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others” (NIV). Paul was pointing the church toward the mindset of Christ, not asking Christians to neglect legitimate responsibilities.

Jesus said, “By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another” (John 13:35, NIV). Notice what He made visible to the world: not merely what His followers believed, but how their belief changed the way they treated people.

That brings us back to our September question: If someone examined the way you treat the people closest to you, would they see Jesus?

Do not answer too quickly. Think about one relationship. Where has convenience replaced compassion? Where have you been waiting for the other person to make the first move? Where might love require your time, attention, humility, generosity, or courage?

This week, choose one intentional act that seeks that person’s good. Do it quietly, sincerely, and without demanding anything in return. Then use the free EXCEL2FAITH Christ-Centered Relationship Framework and its Relationship Check-In to continue the conversation with God.

Crazy Love

We have previously reviewed and recommended Francis Chan’s Crazy Love, but it deserves another look because its message connects so naturally with “Loving Like Jesus: When Love Becomes More Than a Feeling.”

Chan begins with a truth Christians know well but can easily become too familiar with: God loves us with an extraordinary, relentless love. “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses…” — Acts 1:8 (NIV)

Jesus’ final words to His disciples before His ascension are significant. He did not simply tell them, “Go out there and try harder.” He promised them power.

The disciples had walked with Jesus, heard His teaching, witnessed His miracles, and seen the risen Christ. Yet Jesus still told them to wait for the Holy Spirit. Their knowledge of Jesus was essential, but the mission ahead required something beyond human confidence.

It required the Spirit of God.

Throughout this month, we have been learning what it means to walk in the Spirit. We began by understanding who the Holy Spirit is. We learned to recognize His guidance, allow Him to produce spiritual fruit within us, and respond when He lovingly convicts us.

But His work does not stop with what happens inside us.

Eventually, what God is doing within us is meant to become visible through us.

You Are a Witness Before You Say a Word

When Jesus called His followers “witnesses,” He used language His disciples would have understood. A witness was someone who testified about what he had personally seen, heard, or experienced.

That changes how we think about sharing our faith.

You do not need to know the answer to every theological question. You do not need a dramatic testimony. You do not need an evangelist’s personality. You begin with what you know: what has Jesus done in your life?

Peter encouraged believers to “Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have” (1 Peter 3:15, NIV). Peter wrote to Christians facing difficulty and opposition. Their lives were supposed to display a hope noticeable enough that others might ask about it.

Sometimes your strongest witness begins before the conversation ever does.

People notice patience where anger would be understandable. They notice integrity when compromise would be easier. They notice peace during uncertainty and compassion toward people who cannot repay it.

The fruit we discussed earlier in this series becomes part of the witness we are discussing now.

The Holy Spirit Supplies What Fear Says You Lack

Sharing our faith can feel intimidating. We may wonder, What if I say the wrong thing? What if they reject me? What if I don’t know what to say?

Those fears are real, but they do not disqualify us.

Paul reminded Timothy, “For the Spirit God gave us does not make us timid, but gives us power, love and self-discipline” (2 Timothy 1:7, NIV). Timothy was a young leader carrying enormous responsibility. Paul was reminding him that fear did not have to determine his obedience.

Notice that the Spirit provides not only power, but also love.

That matters.

Spirit-empowered witnessing is not winning arguments, cornering people, or forcing conversations. We are not called to treat another person like a spiritual project. We are called to love people and remain sensitive to what God may be doing in their lives.

Jesus told His disciples that when difficult moments came, “the Holy Spirit will teach you at that time what you should say” (Luke 12:12, NIV).

Our responsibility is availability. His responsibility is empowerment.

Your Ordinary Life Is Part of the Mission

We sometimes imagine witnessing happening only on mission trips, street corners, or inside church ministries. Yet most of our opportunities happen somewhere far less dramatic.

At the dinner table.

At work.

During a phone conversation.

While helping a neighbor.

In an unexpected conversation with someone who needs hope.

Jesus told His followers, “You are the light of the world” (Matthew 5:14, NIV). In the first-century world, light was precious and practical. It allowed people to see where they were going. Jesus was describing a life that makes something visible.

That is still our calling.

Your kindness can make Christ visible. Your forgiveness can make Him visible. Your integrity, generosity, patience, courage, and willingness to speak about the hope you have found can point someone toward Him.

You may never know how deeply God uses an ordinary conversation.

Walking in the Spirit Was Never Meant to End With Us

This entire series has been leading here.

The Holy Spirit makes us aware of His presence. He guides us. He develops Christlike fruit within us. He convicts us when something interferes with our relationship with God. Then He sends us back into our everyday lives, increasingly shaped by Jesus.

Paul described believers as “Christ’s ambassadors, as though God were making his appeal through us” (2 Corinthians 5:20, NIV). An ambassador represents someone greater than himself. His purpose is not self-promotion but faithful representation.

That is a beautiful picture of the Spirit-filled life.

We do not represent Jesus perfectly. We are still growing. But that could be part of the testimony too. People do not need to see flawless Christians. They need to encounter people who genuinely love Christ, humbly acknowledge their need for grace, and increasingly resemble the Savior they proclaim.

So as we close this series, ask yourself:

Where might the Holy Spirit be asking me to become more available?

Perhaps someone needs encouragement. Someone who has been watching how you handle adversity. Someone who may be ready for a conversation about faith. Or perhaps God wants you to live tomorrow with greater awareness that wherever you go, He goes with you.

Walking in the Spirit is not merely learning to recognize God’s presence.

It is allowing His presence to change how we live, how we love, and ultimately, how we represent Jesus to the world.

This week, ask the Holy Spirit for one opportunity to encourage someone, share your story, offer prayer, or demonstrate Christ’s love. Then stay attentive. The opportunity may arrive in a way you never expected.

Prayer: Holy Spirit, give me the courage, wisdom, and love to represent Jesus faithfully. Make me attentive to the people You place before me and willing to follow when You open the door. Amen.

The Master Plan of Evangelism

What if evangelism were less about mastering a presentation and more about becoming the kind of disciple Jesus can use to reach others?

“And when He has come, He will convict the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment.” John 16:8 (NKJV)

There are moments in our walk with God when something inside us will not let us remain comfortable.

Maybe it is something we said. An attitude we allowed to grow. A decision we know was wrong. Perhaps it is something less obvious, like pride, resentment, impatience, or an unwillingness to forgive.

We feel that uncomfortable stirring within us, and our first instinct may be to think, God must be disappointed in me.

But what if that discomfort is not God pushing you away?

What if it is the Holy Spirit lovingly drawing your attention to something because He intends to help you grow?

Conviction Is Evidence of Relationship

Throughout our August series, we have been learning what it means to walk in the Spirit.

We began by understanding who the Holy Spirit is, not merely a power or influence, but the Person of God dwelling within the believer. Then we explored what it means to be led by the Spirit, learning to recognize and respond to His guidance. Last week, we saw how that relationship begins producing spiritual fruit, changing us from the inside out.

But transformation also requires correction.

Jesus explained that part of the Spirit’s ministry would be conviction. In John 16, He prepared His disciples for His departure and explained the coming ministry of the Holy Spirit. Conviction, therefore, was never presented as divine rejection. It was part of God’s continuing work in people’s hearts.

David understood the value of allowing God to reveal what needed changing:

“Search me, O God, and know my heart; try me, and know my anxieties; and see if there is any wicked way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.” Psalm 139:23–24 (NKJV)

That is an extraordinarily courageous prayer.

David was essentially saying, Lord, show me what I cannot see about myself.

Spiritual maturity begins when we stop asking God merely to change our circumstances and become willing to let Him change us.

Conviction and Condemnation Are Not the Same

This distinction matters because many believers confuse the two.

Condemnation says, “You failed. This is who you are.”

Conviction says, “This is wrong. Let Me help you change.”

Condemnation focuses on shame. Conviction points toward restoration.

Paul wrote to believers in Rome:

“There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus.” Romans 8:1 (NKJV)

Paul was not suggesting that Christians never sin or never require correction. Romans 8 describes life through the Spirit after Paul has openly wrestled with the reality of sin in Romans 7.

His message is powerful: God can confront what is wrong in us without rejecting us.

Think about Peter after denying Jesus three times. Peter had failed publicly and painfully. Yet Jesus did not discard him. After the resurrection, Jesus restored Peter and asked him three times, “Do you love Me?” before entrusting him again with responsibility for His people (John 21:15–17).

Jesus addressed Peter’s failure, but He did not define Peter by it.

That is what grace does.

The Holy Spirit Corrects What He Is Growing

Sometimes we pray for spiritual growth while resisting the very correction necessary to produce it.

We ask God for patience, but become defensive when He exposes our impatience. We ask for humility, then resist when pride is revealed. We ask Him to make us more loving while holding tightly to resentment.

Yet Scripture tells us:

“For whom the LORD loves He corrects, just as a father the son in whom he delights.” Proverbs 3:12 (NKJV)

Notice the connection between correction and delight.

God’s correction is not evidence that He has stopped loving us. Biblical correction flows from relationship.

The writer of Hebrews develops the same truth, explaining that God’s discipline ultimately produces something valuable:

“Nevertheless, afterward it yields the peaceable fruit of righteousness to those who have been trained by it.” Hebrews 12:11 (NKJV)

There is our word again: fruit.

Last week we talked about the fruit of the Spirit. This week we discover that sometimes God cultivates that fruit by showing us what is preventing it from growing.

That may be uncomfortable.

But uncomfortable does not mean unhealthy.

Respond Instead of Running

When the Holy Spirit brings something to your attention, you really have two choices: resist Him or respond to Him.

The healthier response is not endless guilt. It is confession, repentance, and movement forward.

John assured early believers:

“If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” 1 John 1:9 (NKJV)

Notice what happens after confession.

Forgiveness.

Cleansing.

Restoration.

So when conviction comes, pause before automatically assuming God is angry with you. Ask instead:

Holy Spirit, what are You showing me? What needs to change? And what would obedience look like from here?

Then listen.

Perhaps you need to apologize. Forgive someone. Change a habit. Admit that you were wrong. Release an attitude. Walk away from something that has quietly gained too much influence over your heart.

Whatever He reveals, take the next faithful step.

Walking in the Spirit does not mean reaching a point where we no longer need correction. It means becoming increasingly willing to receive it.

This week, do not run from conviction. Invite the Holy Spirit to search your heart. When He reveals something, bring it to God honestly, receive His grace, and take one deliberate step of obedience.

Correction in God’s hands is not the end of the story.

Sometimes it is exactly where growth begins.

“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control.” Galatians 5:22–23, NKJV

When I was a boy, my father’s best friend owned acres of fruit trees. He grew avocados, limes, grapefruit, oranges, and more. His two sons were my best friends, so I spent plenty of time running through those fields with them.

One morning, we were told to pick several bags of limes. We took off through the grove looking for the right trees until we found one covered with large, lime-looking fruit. We started picking, laughing and imagining how pleased their dad would be when we returned with bags overflowing.

There was only one problem.

We had picked grapefruit.

I still remember dragging those heavy bags back and discovering that all our enthusiasm had produced the wrong fruit. We meant well. We worked hard. From our inexperienced perspective, it even looked right.

But it wasn’t the real thing.

Years later, I can see a spiritual lesson in that childhood mistake. Sometimes what looks like spiritual fruit is not necessarily fruit produced by the Spirit.

Fruit Reveals What Is Happening Within

Paul’s words in Galatians were written to believers wrestling with an important question: Are we transformed through human effort and religious performance, or through a life surrendered to God?

Just before describing the fruit of the Spirit, Paul gives us the key:

“Walk in the Spirit, and you shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh.” Galatians 5:16, NKJV

Notice the order.

Paul does not say, “Perfect your behavior, and then you can walk with the Spirit.” He tells us to walk with the Spirit because transformation grows from that relationship.

That connects directly with where we have been in this series. We began by understanding who the Holy Spirit is and His personal presence in our lives. Last week, we explored what it means to recognize His gentle guidance.

Now we discover what happens as we continue walking with Him.

Our lives begin to bear fruit.

Fruit Is Grown, Not Manufactured

Sometimes we approach Galatians 5:22–23 like a spiritual report card.

Love? Doing fairly well. Patience? Needs improvement. Self-control? We would rather not discuss that one.

But Paul calls these qualities fruit, not accomplishments.

Jesus explained the same principle to His disciples:

“Abide in Me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself… neither can you, unless you abide in Me.” John 15:4, NKJV

Jesus spoke these words shortly before His crucifixion, preparing His disciples for life after His physical departure. Their spiritual effectiveness would not come from trying harder. It would come from remaining connected to Him.

We can imitate patience for a while. We can make ourselves act kindly. We can suppress anger and appear peaceful. From a distance, it may even look like the right fruit.

But the Holy Spirit wants something deeper than improved appearances.

He wants to change the source.

Paul describes that transformation:

“But we all… are being transformed into the same image from glory to glory, just as by the Spirit of the Lord.” 2 Corinthians 3:18, NKJV

That verse reminds me of something else from my younger years.

As I became a young adult, friends of mine and my father’s friends began telling me, “You look like your dad.” Some said I talked like him. One person even commented that I had his mannerisms.

I remember those comments because they meant people who knew my father could recognize something of him in me.

Perhaps that gives us a beautiful picture of spiritual maturity.

The closer we walk with God, the more His character should become recognizable in us.

Not because we are pretending to be like Him, but because time spent in His presence is changing us.

Look for Growth in Ordinary Moments

Most spiritual fruit does not develop during dramatic spiritual experiences. It grows on Tuesday afternoon when someone tests your patience.

It appears when you choose kindness toward someone who cannot benefit you. When anxiety begins rising, yet you turn toward God instead of allowing fear to control you. When you could respond sharply but sense that quiet inner prompting: Not that way.

And you listen.

Jesus said:

“You will know them by their fruits.” Matthew 7:16, NKJV

Fruit eventually becomes visible.

So perhaps the question is not simply, Do I know about the Holy Spirit? It is: Is my relationship with Him changing the way I live?

Think about the past year. Are you becoming more patient? More compassionate? Quicker to forgive? Slower to anger? More peaceful when circumstances remain uncertain?

Do not look for perfection. Look for growth.

Stay Close to the Source

Fruit takes time.

Paul reminds believers:

“For it is God who works in you both to will and to do for His good pleasure.” Philippians 2:13, NKJV

God is working within you, even when growth feels slow.

Our responsibility is not to obsess over producing fruit. Our responsibility is to remain close to the One producing it.

This week, choose one fruit from Galatians 5:22–23 that needs greater expression in your life. Instead of simply promising to try harder, bring that area honestly before God each morning.

Ask, “Holy Spirit, what would it look like for You to produce this in me today?”

Then pay attention.

The goal of walking in the Spirit is not simply to hear Him better. It is to become more like Christ because we have learned to walk closely with Him.

Perhaps, over time, the greatest evidence of that transformation will be something we do not even notice ourselves.

Others will.

They will encounter our patience, kindness, gentleness, peace, faithfulness, and love and recognize something familiar.

They will see something of our Father in us.

“For those who are led by the Spirit of God are the children of God.” Romans 8:14 (NIV)

I still remember the day my father took my mother and me to the mall. I couldn’t have been more than nine years old.

The place was packed. There must have been a big sale because people seemed to be everywhere. Shopping bags filled the aisles, conversations came from every direction, and every storefront was humming with activity. My mom would stop to browse while my dad held my hand as we walked from store to store.

I never thought much about it. As long as Dad was holding my hand, I wasn’t concerned about where we were going. I knew I was safe.

Somewhere along the way, I let go.

To this day, I don’t remember why. Maybe something caught my attention in a store window. Maybe curiosity got the best of me. One moment I knew exactly where my parents were, and the next I was standing alone.

Fear settled in almost instantly.

The crowd that had seemed exciting only moments before now felt overwhelming. Every face was unfamiliar. Every direction looked the same. What probably lasted less than a minute felt like forever to a frightened little boy.

Then I felt a familiar hand gently take hold of mine.

I looked up.

It was Dad.

The fear disappeared almost immediately. I wasn’t worried about finding my way anymore because the one holding my hand already knew the way.

I’ve thought about that moment many times over the years. Looking back, I’ve realized that’s often what life with the Holy Spirit looks like. The safest place isn’t figuring everything out on my own. It’s staying close to the One who already knows where He’s leading me.

The Holy Spirit Doesn’t Merely Give Directions. He Walks With Us.

Many Christians spend their lives searching for God’s will as though it were hidden treasure sitting to be discovered. We ask, “What job should I take?” “Should I move?” “Is this the right opportunity?”

Those are important questions, but perhaps there’s a better one.

Am I staying close enough to the Holy Spirit to recognize His leading?

Jesus prepared His disciples for this very reality before His crucifixion. He told them, “But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all the truth.” John 16:13 (NIV)

Jesus wasn’t giving a list of daily instructions. He was promising His continued presence through the Holy Spirit. The disciples would no longer walk beside Jesus physically, but they would never walk alone.

That promise extends to us today.

The Holy Spirit doesn’t simply point us toward the right path and wish us well. He walks with us every step of the journey.

Staying Close Makes His Voice Easier to Recognize

If I’m honest, there are days I’d love for God to send me a detailed roadmap. Could we provide an update describing the next five years? Perhaps a giant arrow in the sky pointing in the right direction.

Instead, He usually gives enough light for the next step.

The prophet Isaiah offered this beautiful promise to God’s people: “Whether you turn to the right or to the left, your ears will hear a voice behind you, saying, ‘This is the way; walk in it.’” Isaiah 30:21 (NIV). Though Isaiah encouraged Israel to trust in God’s restoration after seasons of rebellion, the principle reminds us that God delights in guiding those whose hearts are turned toward Him.

Over the years I’ve discovered something simple but profound.

The closer I stay to God, the easier it becomes to recognize His voice.

That closeness grows through unhurried prayer, regular time in His Word, silent periods of contemplation, and a willingness to obey even when the next step feels uncomfortable.

The Spirit never contradicts Scripture. He never leads through fear or confusion. Instead, He gently aligns our hearts with God’s truth.

Paul wrote, “Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts.” Colossians 3:15 (NIV). While Paul was encouraging unity within the church, God’s peace often serves as a gracious reminder that we are walking where He is leading.

The Greatest Obstacle Is Often Our Own Grip

As a little boy, I let go of my father’s hand because I thought something else deserved my attention.

How often do we do the same with God?

We become distracted by success, consumed by worry, impatient with waiting, or convinced that our plans are better than His. We don’t intentionally walk away from God. We loosen our grip one small decision at a time.

Then life becomes confusing, and we wonder why.

Solomon wisely wrote, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.” Proverbs 3:5-6 (NIV). These familiar verses were written to encourage wholehearted dependence upon God rather than confidence in our own understanding.

Surrender isn’t about giving up control because God demands it.

It’s about trusting the One who already sees what we cannot.

When I was nine years old, I didn’t know how to find my parents in that crowded mall.

Dad did.

Today I still don’t know what every tomorrow holds.

But my heavenly Father does.

One Faithful Step at a Time

Paul gives believers one simple instruction: “Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit.” Galatians 5:25 (NIV). He had just contrasted the works of the flesh with the fruit produced by the Spirit. His conclusion is beautifully practical. The Christian life isn’t about trying harder. It’s about walking closer.

Every morning offers a fresh invitation.

Before checking emails, scrolling headlines, or reviewing our calendars, we can quietly pray, “Holy Spirit, lead me today.”

Guide my words.

Shape my attitude.

Help me notice the person who needs encouragement.

Give me the courage to obey when You nudge my heart.

Most of the Christian life isn’t lived in dramatic moments. It’s lived in ordinary Tuesdays, routine conversations, unexpected interruptions, and quiet acts of obedience that no one else may ever notice.

Those small moments become extraordinary when we place our hand in the Father’s and choose to stay close.

The Holy Spirit has never asked us to know the entire journey.

He invites us to trust the One who does.

Perhaps that’s the lesson I began learning in a crowded shopping mall all those years ago. I thought safety came from knowing where I was.

It actually came from knowing whose hand I was holding.

May we choose today to walk so closely with the Holy Spirit that, wherever He leads, we never feel the need to let go.

Heavenly Father, thank You for giving us Your Holy Spirit to guide our steps each day. Teach us to stay close to You, trust Your wisdom above our own, and faithfully follow wherever You lead. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

If you were asked to describe your relationship with God, you would probably begin by talking about the Father who loves you and Jesus Christ who died to save you. But what about the Holy Spirit?

For many believers, the Holy Spirit remains the least understood Person of the Trinity. We know He is important. We believe He lives within us. Yet for many, He quietly occupies the background of our faith rather than becoming an active, daily companion in our walk with Christ.

Perhaps that is because we sometimes misunderstand who He is.

Some think of the Holy Spirit as an invisible force that appears when we need extra strength. Others view Him primarily through miraculous experiences or extraordinary gifts. Still others only think about Him when they are facing an impossible situation and desperately need God’s help.

Scripture presents something far more beautiful.

The Holy Spirit is not God’s emergency response when life falls apart. He is God’s abiding presence, given to every believer from the very moment they place their faith in Jesus Christ. His desire is not simply to rescue us during life’s storms, but to walk with us through every ordinary moment, shaping us into the likeness of Christ.

That relationship begins long before we ever recognize just how much we need Him.

The Holy Spirit Is God, Not a Spiritual Force

Our culture is fascinated with unseen power. Movies and books often portray mysterious forces that grant wisdom, strength, or supernatural ability to those who learn how to access them. While entertaining, those ideas can quietly influence how we think about the Holy Spirit.

The Bible paints an entirely different picture.

The Holy Spirit is not an impersonal power to be used. He is the third Person of the Trinity, fully God, equal with the Father and the Son. Throughout Scripture He teaches, speaks, comforts, guides, and loves. He can even be grieved.

Paul writes,

“And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption.” Ephesians 4:30 (NKJV)

Paul wrote these words while encouraging believers in Ephesus to live lives worthy of their calling. His reminder reveals something remarkable. We cannot grieve a force or an emotion. We grieve a Person. The Holy Spirit desires relationship because He Himself is personal.

Understanding this changes the way we approach our faith. Instead of asking, “How can I access the Holy Spirit’s power?” we begin asking, “How can I know Him more deeply?”

He Comes to Live Within Us

On the night before His crucifixion, Jesus comforted His anxious disciples with an extraordinary promise.

“And I will pray the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may abide with you forever.” John 14:16 (NKJV)

The word Helper comes from the Greek word Parakletos, describing one who comes alongside to encourage, counsel, strengthen, and advocate. Jesus was preparing His disciples for a day when His physical presence would no longer be with them, yet God’s presence would become even more intimate through the Holy Spirit.

That promise became reality after Christ’s resurrection and the coming of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost in Acts 2. Since that time, every believer receives the Holy Spirit at salvation.

Paul reminds us,

“Or do you not know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God?”

1 Corinthians 6:19 (NKJV)

Think about that for a moment.

The God who created the universe chooses to dwell within those who belong to Him.

Not occasionally.

Not only during worship.

Not just in moments of crisis.

Every day.

Every moment.

His presence is one of God’s greatest gifts to His children.

Walking Together, Not Simply Calling for Help

Every healthy relationship grows through time, conversation, trust, and intentionality. Our relationship with the Holy Spirit is no different.

Many of us have experienced friendships that gradually faded, not because of conflict, but because life became busy and the relationship was neglected. Communication became less frequent until familiarity was replaced by distance.

Our relationship with the Holy Spirit can suffer in similar ways.

He has not moved away from us, but we can become distracted by the pace of life. We rely upon our own understanding, our own abilities, and our own plans before remembering to seek His wisdom. The Christian life was never intended to be lived independently with occasional moments of divine assistance. From beginning to end, it is a life of continual dependence upon God’s Spirit.

Paul captures this beautifully:

“If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit.” Galatians 5:25 (NKJV)

Notice he says walk.

Walking is steady. It is daily. It speaks of companionship rather than emergency.

The Holy Spirit desires far more than occasional conversations. He invites us into continual fellowship where our thoughts, desires, and character are gradually shaped to reflect Jesus Christ.

The Beginning of a Lifelong Journey

As we begin this month’s journey together, it is worth remembering that the Christian life is not about learning more information about the Holy Spirit. It is about growing in relationship with Him.

Over the coming weeks, we will discover how He leads us with wisdom, produces His fruit within our character, lovingly convicts us when we wander, and empowers us to live boldly for Christ. Each of those experiences flows from one foundational truth: we cannot walk in the Spirit until we first know the Spirit.

That relationship is not built overnight.

It grows through reading God’s Word, spending time in prayer, responding in obedience, and becoming increasingly aware of His quiet work in our everyday lives. Like any meaningful relationship, it deepens as we intentionally make room for it.

The invitation is beautifully simple.

Do not wait until life becomes difficult before seeking the Holy Spirit’s guidance.

Welcome Him into your ordinary moments.

Invite Him into your conversations, your decisions, your work, your worship, your joys, and even your silence. The more you walk with Him, the more you will discover that He has been faithfully walking with you all along.

Heavenly Father, thank You for giving us the gift of Your Holy Spirit. Help us to know Him more personally, walk with Him more faithfully, and become more like Jesus each day as we grow in fellowship with Your abiding presence. Amen.

“Now may the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, that you may abound in hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.” Romans 15:13 (NKJV)

Hope is one of the most misunderstood words in our vocabulary. We say, “I hope tomorrow is a better day,” or “I hope everything works out.” In everyday conversation, hope often means wishing for the best while expecting uncertainty.

Biblical hope is entirely different. It is not built on favorable circumstances or positive thinking. It is a confident expectation that God will do exactly what He has promised because His character never changes.

Over the past month, our Faith in the Fire journey has led us through fragile faith, painful seasons, and difficult waiting. Now we arrive at the destination God has been preparing all along: a hope that remains steady when everything else seems uncertain. This final step completes the discipleship journey from fear to confidence, reminding us that while circumstances may shift, God’s promises remain steady.

Hope Is More Than Optimism

The Apostle Paul wrote Romans to believers living under increasing pressure and uncertainty. Yet he prayed that they would overflow with hope, not because life had become easier, but because the Holy Spirit was at work within them.

Romans 15:13 (NKJV) reminds us that God Himself is the source of hope. Joy and peace grow as we trust Him, even before our circumstances change.

This is the difference between optimism and biblical hope. Optimism says, “Things will probably improve.” Biblical hope declares, “God is faithful whether they improve today or not.”

The writer of Hebrews reinforces this truth:

“Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for He who promised is faithful.” Hebrews 10:23 (NKJV)

Our confidence rests not in our ability to hold on to God, but in God’s unwavering commitment to hold on to us.

God’s Character Never Changes

Life can change without warning. Health can decline. Relationships can fracture. Careers can shift. Even carefully made plans can unravel overnight.

Yet one truth remains untouched.

The prophet Jeremiah ministered during one of Israel’s darkest seasons. Jerusalem was under judgment, and the future looked bleak. Still, in the middle of devastation, he wrote these remarkable words:

“Through the LORD’S mercies we are not consumed, because His compassions fail not. They are new every morning; great is Your faithfulness.” Lamentations 3:22-23 (NKJV)

Notice that Jeremiah did not deny the pain around him. Instead, he chose to anchor his heart in God’s unchanging faithfulness.

That same invitation is extended to us today.

When we build our hope on changing circumstances, disappointment is inevitable. When we build our hope on God’s character, stability becomes possible because He is the same yesterday, today, and forever.

Eternal Promises Shape Daily Living

The Bible never encourages believers to ignore present difficulties. Instead, it continually points us toward an eternal perspective.

Peter wrote to Christians who faced persecution, reminding them of an inheritance that could never be taken away.

“…to an inheritance incorruptible and undefiled and that does not fade away, reserved in heaven for you.” 1 Peter 1:4 (NKJV)

This eternal promise gave first-century believers courage to endure temporary suffering.

Likewise, Paul reminds us in Romans 8:18 (NKJV):

“For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us.”

Paul was not minimizing suffering. He experienced imprisonment, beatings, rejection, and hardship firsthand. Yet he viewed present pain through the lens of God’s future promises.

That perspective changes everything.

When we remember eternity, today’s struggles no longer define our story. They become chapters in a much larger narrative of God’s redeeming work.

Keep Taking the Next Step

Hope is not merely something we believe. It is something we practice.

Some days, trusting God looks dramatic. More often, it looks wonderfully ordinary.

It is choosing to pray one more time.

Opening your Bible when you feel spiritually dry.

Offering forgiveness even when it hurts.

Serving faithfully without immediate recognition.

Taking one small step of obedience after another.

The Psalmist beautifully captures this steady confidence:

“Wait on the LORD; be of good courage, and He shall strengthen your heart; wait, I say, on the LORD!” Psalm 27:14 (NKJV)

Hope gives us the courage to keep showing up because we know God is still working, even when we cannot yet see the outcome.

As we conclude this month’s Faith in the Fire series, remember the journey God has taken us on. We began with fragile faith, discovered purpose in pain, learned patience while waiting, and now stand firmly upon enduring hope. None of those experiences were wasted. Together they reveal a God who faithfully shapes His children through every season until Christ is fully formed in them.

Circumstances will continue to change. Seasons will come and go. But the promises of God remain as certain today as they were when they were first spoken.

That is why our hope does not disappoint.

It is anchored, not in this world, but in the unchanging love, faithfulness, and finished work of Jesus Christ.

Will difficult days come again? Almost certainly.

Will God still be faithful? Without question.

Choose today to take one more step of trust. Open His Word. Whisper another prayer. Encourage someone who is struggling. Live as someone whose future is already secure in Christ. The God of hope is not finished writing your story.

Heavenly Father, thank You for being our unchanging source of hope. Strengthen our hearts to trust Your promises above our circumstances, and help us walk each day with confidence in Your everlasting faithfulness. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

“But those who wait on the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles, they shall run and not be weary, they shall walk and not faint.” Isaiah 40:31 (NKJV)

There are few things more difficult than waiting. We pray, seek God’s direction, and ask for answers, yet heaven often seems silent. Whether we’re waiting for healing, a new opportunity, restored relationships, or clarity about the future, the delay can leave us wondering if God has forgotten us.

Last month in our The Seed: Kingdom Growth From Within series, we discovered that spiritual growth unfolds through seasons of planting, nurturing, and harvest. God works according to His perfect timetable, not ours. This month, we are continuing that journey by learning that waiting is not a pause in God’s plan. It is often where He accomplishes some of His deepest work in our hearts.

Our theme passage for this series reminds us that suffering produces perseverance, perseverance shapes character, and character leads to hope that does not disappoint (Romans 5:3-5, NIV). This week, we focus on that next step: character. Waiting is one of God’s greatest classrooms because it teaches us to trust Him even when we cannot yet see His purpose.

Waiting Is Never Wasted

Modern culture teaches us to expect instant results. We can communicate, shop, and access information in seconds. Yet God’s Kingdom rarely operates on the clock we prefer. Throughout Scripture, His greatest servants experienced long seasons of waiting before seeing His promises fulfilled.

Abraham waited decades before Isaac, the promised son, was born (Genesis 21:1-3, NKJV). During those years, God was not absent. He was strengthening Abraham’s faith and teaching him that the fulfillment of God’s promises depends on God’s faithfulness rather than human effort.

Waiting often feels like inactivity, but God is never inactive. While we focus on changing circumstances, He is shaping our hearts. The delay we struggle to understand today may be preparing us for responsibilities, blessings, or opportunities we could not yet carry.

God’s Timing Is Always Connected to His Wisdom

One of the most comforting verses in Scripture is found in Ecclesiastes 3:11 (NKJV): “He has made everything beautiful in its time.” Solomon wrote these words after reflecting on life’s many seasons. His point was not that every season is pleasant, but that every season has purpose within God’s sovereign plan.

Perhaps no biblical story illustrates this better than Joseph’s. Betrayed by his brothers, sold into slavery, falsely accused, and forgotten in prison, Joseph endured years of waiting before becoming Egypt’s governor. Looking backward, the delay made perfect sense because God had positioned him to preserve countless lives during famine (Genesis 50:20, NKJV).

We rarely understand God’s timing while we are living through it. We usually recognize His wisdom only after we have walked through it. Faith means believing that God’s delays are never His denials.

Waiting Develops Trust More Than Answers

Psalm 27:14 (NKJV) encourages believers:

“Wait on the Lord; be of good courage, and He shall strengthen your heart; wait, I say, on the Lord!”

David wrote these words after experiencing danger, uncertainty, and opposition. He learned that waiting was not passive resignation but active dependence upon God. Waiting requires courage because trusting an unseen God often feels more difficult than taking matters into our own hands.

Many of us pray, “Lord, change my circumstances.” God often responds first by changing us.

During seasons of waiting, He develops patience, humility, perseverance, and deeper dependence upon His Spirit. These qualities cannot be rushed. Just as fruit matures gradually on a tree, spiritual maturity develops over time. God’s goal is not merely to answer our prayers. His greater desire is to conform us to the image of Christ.

Isaiah’s promise reminds us that those who wait upon the Lord receive renewed strength. Notice that God does not promise immediate explanations. He promises His sustaining presence.

Trust the God Who Sees the Whole Picture

One of the most beloved promises in Scripture reminds us:

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct your paths.” (Proverbs 3:5-6, NKJV)

Our understanding is limited by what we can see today. God’s perspective stretches across eternity. What appears to us as an unnecessary delay may actually be divine protection, preparation, or provision.

Jesus’ own disciples experienced this truth. After His resurrection, they waited in Jerusalem exactly as He instructed before receiving the Holy Spirit (Acts 1:4-8, NKJV). That period of waiting prepared them for the mission that would transform the world. Had they rushed ahead, they would have attempted God’s work without God’s power.

The same principle remains true today. God’s timing is not simply about when something happens. It is about who we become while we wait.

If you find yourself waiting today, remember this simple truth: God has never been late. Every promise He has made has been fulfilled according to His perfect wisdom. The God who was faithful to Abraham, Joseph, David, and the apostles remains faithful to you.

Instead of asking, “Lord, why are You making me wait?” consider asking, “Lord, what are You teaching me while I wait?” That question often opens our hearts to the transforming work He has been doing all along.

Trust His heart when you cannot trace His hand. His timing is never random, and His love for you never wavers.

Take a moment today to surrender your timeline to the Lord. Place your unanswered prayers, delayed dreams, and uncertain future into His capable hands. Continue to seek Him faithfully, knowing that every season of waiting is preparing you for something greater than you can presently imagine.

Heavenly Father, teach me to trust Your perfect timing even when I long for immediate answers. Strengthen my faith, shape my character, and help me rest confidently in Your unfailing wisdom and love. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

It strips away our illusions of control and leaves us searching for meaning. Yet Scripture consistently reminds us that God never wastes a single tear surrendered to Him.

Pain Is Often God’s Preparation, Not His Punishment

One of the greatest misconceptions among Christians is believing that every hardship is God’s punishment. While the Bible teaches that God disciplines His children out of love, not every trial is corrective. Many are transformative.

The Apostle Paul wrote in Romans 5 that suffering produces perseverance, perseverance develops character, and character gives birth to hope. This progression is not accidental. God is far more interested in shaping our hearts than simply improving our circumstances. The trials we would gladly avoid are often the very tools He uses to mold us into the image of Christ.

James echoed this truth when he encouraged believers, “Consider it pure joy… whenever you face trials of many kinds” because the testing of faith produces perseverance and maturity (James 1:2-4, NIV). James wrote these words to scattered Jewish Christians facing persecution and hardship. His encouragement was not to enjoy suffering itself, but to recognize God’s redemptive work through it.

Pain may interrupt our plans, but it never interrupts God’s purpose.

God’s Greatest Work Often Happens Behind the Scenes

Few biblical figures illustrate this better than Joseph. Betrayed by his brothers, sold into slavery, falsely accused, and imprisoned, Joseph spent years wondering what God was doing. From a human perspective, his story looked like one setback after another.

Yet years later, Joseph declared to his brothers, “You intended to harm me, but God intended it for good” (Genesis 50:20, NIV). What others meant for evil, God transformed into salvation for an entire nation.

God rarely reveals the full picture while we are walking through the valley. Instead, He invites us to trust His character when we cannot yet understand His plan.

The prophet Isaiah reminded God’s people during a season of exile, “For My thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways My ways,” declares the Lord (Isaiah 55:8-9, NIV). Israel struggled to understand their suffering, yet God was preparing a future they could not yet see.

Our perspective is limited. God’s never is.

The Fire Refines What God Values Most

Gold is refined by intense heat. The fire does not destroy the precious metal; it removes impurities, making its true beauty visible.

Peter used this same picture when encouraging persecuted believers. He wrote that trials prove the genuineness of faith, “of greater worth than gold, which perishes even though refined by fire” (1 Peter 1:6-7, NIV). Peter addressed Christians facing severe persecution under the Roman Empire. Rather than promising immediate relief, he assured them that their suffering was producing something eternal.

God often allows the fire because He sees the masterpiece hidden beneath the impurities.

This does not mean suffering is easy or that believers should pretend everything is fine. Jesus Himself wept at Lazarus’ tomb, even knowing resurrection was moments away (John 11:35, NKJV). His tears remind us that grief is not a lack of faith. Faith simply refuses to let grief have the final word.

When we surrender our pain to God, He gradually transforms bitterness into compassion, pride into humility, fear into confidence, and self-reliance into deeper dependence upon Him.

That refining process is rarely comfortable, but it is always purposeful.

Trust the Refiner More Than the Fire

Pain naturally causes us to ask, “Why is this happening?”

While God may not always answer that question immediately, He consistently answers a more important one: Who is walking with me through this?

The Lord assured Joshua before leading Israel into the Promised Land, “Be strong and courageous… for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go” (Joshua 1:9, NIV). God’s greatest promise has never been a trouble-free life. His greatest promise is His faithful presence.

Perhaps today you find yourself carrying unanswered prayers, lingering grief, or circumstances that simply do not make sense. Remember that your Heavenly Father has not stepped away from your story. Even when you cannot trace His hand, you can trust His heart.

One day you may look back, like Joseph, and recognize that what once seemed like the darkest chapter became one of God’s greatest instruments for shaping your life.

Pain is never pleasant. But in God’s hands, it is never pointless.

Not every crisis begins with tragedy. Sometimes it begins with a prayer that seems to go unanswered. A diagnosis changes everything. A relationship fractures. A door you’ve prayed would open quietly closes instead. You still believe in God, but the confidence you once felt gives way to questions you never expected to ask.

If you’ve ever wondered, “Why does my faith feel so weak right now?”, you’re not alone. Nearly every believer reaches a season when trusting God feels more difficult than before. Those moments can leave us wondering whether something is wrong with our faith.

Last month, in our series The Seed: Kingdom Growth From Within, we explored how God grows spiritual fruit through His Word, His Spirit, and our obedience. But growth rarely happens without testing. Just as fire refines precious metals, God often uses life’s hardest seasons to deepen the faith He has planted within us. This month, we begin a new journey called Faith in the Fire, discovering how God remains faithful even when life feels uncertain.

Many believers assume that mature faith never struggles. Scripture tells a different story.

King David cried out in despair, asking, “How long, Lord? Will you forget me forever?” (Psalm 13:1-2, NKJV). These words were not spoken by a man who had abandoned God but by one who deeply trusted Him. David teaches us that honest prayer is not a sign of spiritual failure. It is often the doorway to deeper intimacy with God.

God never rebuked David for bringing his pain honestly before Him. Instead, the Psalms reveal a loving Father who listens to broken hearts and gently restores hope. Faith does not require pretending everything is fine. It invites us to bring every fear, disappointment, and question into God’s presence.

One of the most encouraging moments in the Gospels comes from a desperate father seeking healing for his son. Overwhelmed by his circumstances, he cried out to Jesus, “Lord, I believe; help my unbelief!” (Mark 9:24, NKJV).

What a remarkable confession.

His faith was imperfect, yet it was genuine. Jesus did not reject him because his faith contained doubt. Instead, He responded with compassion and power.

Many Christians wrongly believe doubt automatically disqualifies them from God’s work. Yet there is a difference between questioning God and turning away from Him. Honest questions seek understanding. Unbelief refuses to trust. Throughout Scripture, God patiently met those who came to Him with sincere hearts, even when their faith felt fragile.

James wrote to believers scattered by persecution and hardship. Rather than promising immediate relief, he encouraged them to see their trials through a different lens.

“The testing of your faith produces perseverance” (James 1:3, NIV).

Testing is never comfortable, but it is always purposeful. Just as muscles grow stronger through resistance, spiritual maturity develops through seasons that stretch our dependence on God.

The apostle Paul understood this truth personally. After pleading with God to remove his “thorn in the flesh,” the Lord answered, “My grace is sufficient for you, for My strength is made perfect in weakness” (2 Corinthians 12:9, NKJV). Paul’s circumstances did not immediately change, but his understanding of God’s sustaining grace did.

God is often doing His deepest work in us when we can see the least of what He is doing around us.

Our circumstances change. God’s character never does.

That is why Romans 5:3-5 (NIV), our theme passage for this series, reminds us that suffering produces perseverance, perseverance develops character, and character gives birth to hope that will never disappoint. Paul wrote these words to believers experiencing real hardship, assuring them that God was shaping something eternal through their present struggles.

When fear whispers that God has forgotten you, remember His promises.

When disappointment clouds your vision, remember His faithfulness.

When answers seem delayed, remember that His timing has always been perfect.

Hebrews 11:1 (NKJV) reminds us that “faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.” Biblical faith is not confidence that life will become easy. It is confidence that God remains good, even when we cannot yet understand His plan.

Perhaps today your faith feels weaker than it once did. That does not mean God has abandoned you. It may simply mean He is inviting you into a deeper level of trust than you’ve ever known before.

The fire is not meant to destroy your faith.

By God’s grace, it will refine it.

Will you trust Him today, even before you understand tomorrow?

Heavenly Father, thank You for meeting me in moments when my faith feels weak and my heart is full of questions. Strengthen my trust, remind me of Your unchanging character, and help me walk confidently through every trial, knowing that You are working all things together for Your glory and my good. “To everything there is a season, a time for every purpose under heaven.” — Ecclesiastes 3:1, NKJV.

The June 2026 EXCEL2FAITH series, “The Seed: Kingdom Growth from Within,” has moved from origin to responsibility to formation and now to multiplication, the truth that what God grows in us is never meant to stop with us.

Every garden tells a quiet story. A seed disappears into the soil, hidden from view. For a season, nothing seems to happen. Then a small green shoot breaks through, grows stronger, bears fruit, and eventually carries more seed within itself. What began as one seed becomes provision, beauty, nourishment, and future growth.

That is also the pattern of the Kingdom of God. God plants His Word in us, forms our hearts through time and surrender, and then brings forth fruit that blesses others. The question is not only, “Am I growing?” The deeper question is, “What will my life produce?”

Growth Is Never Just for Personal Benefit

In Matthew 13, Jesus explains the parable of the sower. The seed is the Word of the Kingdom, and the soil represents the condition of the heart. But the goal is not merely for the seed to survive. The goal is fruitfulness.

Jesus said, “But he who received seed on the good ground is he who hears the word and understands it, who indeed bears fruit and produces: some a hundredfold, some sixty, some thirty” (Matthew 13:23, NKJV). In its biblical context, Jesus taught His followers that the Kingdom often begins in hidden, humble ways, but when received rightly, it produces visible, multiplied results.

This matters because spiritual growth can easily become self-focused. We may ask, “Am I healing? Am I maturing? Am I stronger?” Those are good questions, but they are not the final questions. God’s work in you is deeply personal, but it is never merely private.

The patience He develops in you may become mercy for someone else. The wisdom He teaches you may become a source of guidance for another believer. The comfort He gives you may one day become a source of strength for someone walking through the same valley.

Fruit Carries Future Seed

One of the most beautiful truths in creation is that fruit carries seed. Fruit is not only the evidence of growth; it is also the beginning of future multiplication.

Paul writes, “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control” (Galatians 5:22–23, NKJV). In context, Paul is contrasting life led by the flesh with life led by the Spirit. Spiritual fruit is not personality polish. It is evidence that the Holy Spirit is shaping the believer’s inner life.

When love grows in you, others experience the kindness of God through you. When peace grows in you, anxious people find steadiness near you. When self-control grows in you, your decisions begin to bless your family, your work, your ministry, and your future.

Jesus gave the same principle with even greater clarity: “By this My Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit; so you will be My disciples” (John 15:8, NKJV). In John 15, Jesus speaks of the vine and the branches. Fruitfulness comes from abiding, not striving. The branch does not produce fruit by pressure; it produces fruit by connection.

That is a needed word for today. Kingdom multiplication is not a frantic activity. It is the overflow of abiding in Christ.

Harvest Comes in Seasons

Ecclesiastes 3:1 reminds us that life moves in seasons. There is a time to plant, a time to water, a time to wait, and a time to harvest. The mistake many believers make is expecting every season to look productive.

Some seasons feel quiet. Some feel buried. Some feel like pruning. But God is not absent in any of them.

Paul encourages the Galatian believers, “And let us not grow weary while doing good, for in due season we shall reap if we do not lose heart” (Galatians 6:9, NKJV). The phrase “in due season” matters. Paul was teaching a weary church that faithful sowing may not produce immediate results, but God is never careless with obedience.

This is where many people quit too soon. They sow forgiveness but do not yet see reconciliation. They sow prayer but do not yet see change. They sow obedience but do not yet feel rewarded. But harvest is not controlled by impatience. Harvest belongs to God’s timing.

James also uses the image of farming when he writes, “See how the farmer waits for the precious fruit of the earth, waiting patiently for it until it receives the early and latter rain” (James 5:7, NKJV). In its original setting, James was encouraging believers under pressure to remain patient and faithful. The farmer waits because he trusts the process.

So must we.

What God Grows in You Is Meant to Extend Beyond You

The mature Christian life is not measured only by what we receive from God, but by what flows through us because of God.

Jesus said, “I chose you and appointed you that you should go and bear fruit, and that your fruit should remain” (John 15:16, NKJV). This was spoken to His disciples shortly before the cross. He was preparing them to live beyond the moment, beyond emotion, beyond temporary enthusiasm. Their lives were to produce lasting fruit.

That is still His desire for us.

Your life can produce encouragement. It can produce wisdom. It can produce generosity, faithfulness, courage, discipleship, and prayer. It can produce a legacy that outlives your mood, your schedule, and even your lifetime.

So pause and ask yourself honestly: What is being multiplied through me? Am I multiplying peace or pressure? Faith or fear? Grace or criticism? Wisdom or confusion?

The harvest of your life begins with what you allow God to grow in your heart.

Closing Prayer

Lord, cultivate in me a heart that receives Your Word, abides in Christ, and produces fruit that blesses others. Let what You grow in me multiply for Your glory and for the good of those around me. Amen.

Let this week be more than reflection; let it become surrender. Ask God to show you what your life is producing and where He wants to bring greater fruitfulness.

Over the past two weeks in our June series, “The Seed: Kingdom Growth from Within,” we have reflected on the seed of God’s Word and the responsibility of guarding what is sown into our lives. Now, in Week 3, we turn inward to examine the soil, the condition of the heart where true spiritual growth either takes root or quietly struggles.

And as a special note, today is Father’s Day, June 21, 2026. To every father, grandfather, spiritual father, mentor, and man who has poured wisdom, protection, correction, and love into the lives of others, happy Father’s Day. Your faithfulness matters more than you may ever fully see.

Most of us want the fruit of spiritual growth. We want peace, wisdom, patience, discernment, faith, and strength. But Jesus reminds us in the Parable of the Sower that fruit is not only about the quality of the seed, but also about the condition of the soil.

In Matthew 13, Jesus was teaching people who understood farming, planting, and harvesting. They knew that good seed could still fail to produce if the ground was hard, shallow, thorn-filled, or neglected. Spiritually speaking, the seed is the Word of God, but the soil is the heart.

That raises a tender but necessary question: What is your heart becoming before God?

The Heart Is Where Growth Begins

Jesus said, “When anyone hears the word of the kingdom, and does not understand it, then the wicked one comes and snatches away what was sown in his heart” (Matthew 13:19, NKJV). Notice where the seed is sown: not merely in the mind, but in the heart.

In Scripture, the heart represents the center of a person’s inner life—desire, trust, affection, will, and response. That is why Proverbs says, “Keep your heart with all diligence, for out of it spring the issues of life” (Proverbs 4:23, NKJV). The heart is not decorative; it is directional. It shapes what we receive, how we respond, and what we become.

This is why spiritual growth cannot be reduced to information. We can hear sermons, read devotionals, attend Bible studies, and even quote Scripture, yet still resist God’s deeper work if our hearts remain guarded. Growth begins when we stop asking only, “What do I know?” and begin asking, “What is God forming in me?”

A father understands this principle well. A child may hear instruction, but maturity is revealed when that instruction becomes part of the heart. In the same way, God is not merely giving us words to remember; He is forming us into people who reflect His nature.

Struggle Reveals the Soil

Jesus described the seed that fell on stony places. It sprang up quickly, but because it had no root, it withered when the sun came. He explained that this represents the person who receives the Word with joy, yet stumbles when trouble or persecution arises (Matthew 13:20–21, NKJV).

The sun did not destroy the plant because the sun was evil. The sun revealed the lack of roots.

That is sobering. Pressure often exposes what comfort allows us to ignore. A difficult conversation, a delayed answer to prayer, a season of disappointment, a financial burden, or an unexpected loss can reveal whether our faith is deeply rooted in God or resting only on favorable circumstances.

James wrote, “My brethren, count it all joy when you fall into various trials, knowing that the testing of your faith produces patience” (James 1:2–3, NKJV). James was not minimizing pain. He was showing that the struggle, surrendered to God, can become a place of formation. The trial is not pleasant, but it can deepen the roots.

Sometimes we ask God to remove every pressure, when He may be using certain pressures to reveal where we need deeper trust. That does not mean every hardship is from God, but it does mean no hardship is beyond His ability to redeem, teach, strengthen, and mature us.

The Thorns Compete for the Heart

Jesus also spoke of seed that fell among thorns. It grew, but the thorns choked it. He explained that “the cares of this world and the deceitfulness of riches choke the word, and he becomes unfruitful” (Matthew 13:22, NKJV).

This may be the most subtle soil condition of all. The heart is not rejecting the Word outright. It is simply overcrowded.

Worry, ambition, comparison, resentment, entertainment, financial pressure, disappointment, and the endless noise of life can slowly take over the inner field. The Word is present, but it is no longer primary. It is competing for space God never intended it to share.

Hebrews encourages us to “lay aside every weight, and the sin which so easily ensnares us” (Hebrews 12:1, NKJV). Not every weight looks sinful at first. Some things are simply too heavy, too consuming, or too distracting to carry while trying to grow in Christ.

A healthy heart requires holy pruning. Sometimes God is not trying to add more to your life; He is inviting you to remove what is choking what He has already planted.

This is where honest reflection matters. What has been taking up too much room in your heart lately? What worry keeps replaying? What desire has become too loud? What disappointment has hardened a place that God wants to heal?

Becoming Good Ground

Good soil is not perfect soil. It is receptive soil. It is a heart willing to hear, understand, surrender, and remain.

Jesus said the seed on good ground produces fruit—some a hundredfold, some sixty, some thirty (Matthew 13:23, NKJV). The harvest may differ in measure, but the principle remains: receptive hearts become fruitful lives.

David prayed, “Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me” (Psalm 51:10, NKJV). That prayer came after failure. It reminds us that God can renew the soil. Hardness can soften. Shallow places can deepen. Thorn-filled spaces can be cleared. Struggling hearts can become fruitful again.

So pause and ask honestly: Is my heart becoming softer toward God or harder? More surrendered or more guarded? More fruitful or more crowded?

The seed is faithful. God’s Word has not lost its power. The invitation is to tend the soil with humility, repentance, consistency, and trust.

Today, do not merely ask God for fruit. Ask Him to form the kind of heart where His Word can take root and remain.

Imagine a garden that produces both healthy fruit and stubborn weeds. Not because the soil is confused, but because different seeds have been planted over time. Some intentionally, others carelessly. Some by trusted hands, others by quiet influence.

This month in our EXCEL2FAITH series, The Seed: Kingdom Growth From Within, we are exploring how God grows His Kingdom in and through our lives. In Week 1, we discovered that God has already planted His living Word within us. The seed is not deficient, and our spiritual growth begins with recognizing what He has already given. This week, we turn our attention to a critical question: Who is sowing into your life, and what seeds are being planted in your heart?

Now consider your life. Every conversation, every piece of content, and every relationship is sowing something. The question is not if you are being influenced, but by whom and toward what.

Jesus made it clear in the parable of the sower that the Word is the seed (Matthew 13:19, NKJV). But this week, we shift focus. We are not just focusing on the seed itself, but also on the responsibility surrounding it. Because growth doesn’t happen in isolation. It happens in an environment.

And you are not just soil. You are also a steward.

Guarding the Gateway of the Heart

Proverbs 4:23 (NKJV) was written by Solomon, a king known for wisdom, yet also for the consequences of misplaced influence later in life. His instruction is direct: guard your heart. Why? Because everything flows from it.

In biblical contexts, the heart represents the center of thought, will, and emotion. It is where beliefs take root and decisions are formed. If the heart is the soil, then what enters it matters more than most people realize.

Jesus reinforced this truth in Luke 6:45 (NIV): “A good man brings good things out of the good stored up in his heart... For the mouth speaks what the heart is full of.” The overflow of your life reveals the deposits within your heart.

This is not about fear or isolation; it’s about awareness. You don’t accidentally grow strong faith. You cultivate it by being intentional about what you allow in.

Recognizing the Voices That Shape You

In the Parable of the Sower, Jesus describes multiple outcomes. This is not because the seed changes, but because of the soil’s condition and environment (Matthew 13:3–9, NKJV). But there’s another layer often overlooked: there are many sowers.

God is the primary and perfect sower of truth. James 1:17 (NKJV) reminds us that “every good gift and every perfect gift is from above.” His Word is pure, complete, and life-giving.

But not every voice in your life carries that same truth.

Paul warns in 1 Corinthians 15:33 (NKJV), “Do not be deceived: ‘Evil company corrupts good habits.’” Written to a church navigating cultural and philosophical confusion, this was not merely social advice; it was spiritual protection.

Who you listen to consistently will eventually shape how you think, believe, and act.

That includes:

• The voices you trust

• The content you consume

• The environments you dwell in

Discernment is not optional for spiritual growth; it is essential.

You Are Not Just Receiving; You Are Also Sowing

Here’s where responsibility deepens. You are not only being influenced; you are also influencing others.

Galatians 6:7 (NKJV) states, “Whatever a man sows, that he will also reap.” In its original context, Paul is addressing personal responsibility and spiritual accountability. The principle is clear: sowing and reaping are not just personal; they are relational and generational.

Every word you speak, every reaction you model, and every piece of encouragement or criticism is a seed you are planting.

Parents sow into children. Leaders sow into teams. Friends sow into one another. Even silence can sow confusion or bring clarity.

The question becomes: What kind of seed are you planting?

You cannot expect to harvest peace if you consistently sow fear. You cannot cultivate faith if you regularly plant doubt.

This is not about perfection; it’s about alignment.

Creating an Environment Where Truth Can Grow

If you are serious about spiritual growth, then you must become intentional about your environment.

Jesus said in John 8:31–32 (NIV), “If you hold to my teaching... then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” Notice the condition: hold to it. Stay with it. Remain in it.

Truth does not transform casually. It transforms consistently.

This means:

• Prioritizing time in God’s Word

• Surrounding yourself with voices that reinforce truth

• Being honest about influences that pull you away from God

It also means pruning. Not everything in your life needs to stay. Some influences may not be blatantly wrong, but they may be subtly unhelpful.

Spiritual maturity often looks like quiet decisions: what you turn off, what you lean into, and what you protect.

Because at the end of the day, your life will reflect what has been consistently sown into your heart.

And here’s the honest truth: whether intentional or not, something is always growing.

The question is: Is it aligned with God’s truth?

Take a moment today to evaluate your influences. Not with judgment, but with clarity. Ask yourself: Who is sowing into my life? What seeds are being planted? And what am I planting into others?

You have more responsibility and more authority than you think.

Guard your heart. Choose your influences wisely. And commit to sowing seeds that reflect the life God is growing within you.

Start today. Make one intentional shift: choose one voice to lean into, one influence to step back from, and one truth to anchor your heart in.

And watch what begins to grow.

Lord, give me wisdom to discern what I allow into my heart and courage to sow what reflects Your truth. Help me cultivate a life that honors You and produces lasting fruit. Amen.

There’s a quiet frustration many believers carry but rarely say out loud: “Why don’t I feel like I’m growing?”

You read Scripture, pray when you can, and try to do what’s right, yet something feels incomplete. Spiritual growth can seem just out of reach, like there’s an elusive element you haven’t found.

This month, we’re exploring Matthew 13 with a focused, four-part look at “The Seed” and the internal growth of God’s Kingdom. Each week, we’ll highlight a distinct stage of spiritual transformation, showing what God is doing and how He works in your life.

But what if the issue isn’t that you’re missing something?

What if the truth is this: you’ve already been given more than you realize?

The Seed Is the Word, and It’s Already Been Given

In Matthew 13, Jesus introduces a powerful image: a seed. He later explains that this seed is the Word of God—the message of the Kingdom planted in the human heart.

This wasn’t a random metaphor. In the agricultural world of Jesus’ time, a seed represented life, potential, and future harvest. Farmers understood that everything needed for growth was already contained within that small, seemingly insignificant object.

In the same way, God’s Word is not empty or incomplete. It is living, intentional, and full of divine purpose. As the prophet writes:

“As the rain and the snow come down from heaven… so is my word that goes out from my mouth: It will not return to me empty, but will accomplish what I desire.” — Isaiah 55:10-11 (NIV)

In its original context, this promise was given to a people in exile, those wondering if God’s plans had failed. Yet God reassured them: His Word always produces. It always fulfills its purpose.

That means when God speaks, whether through Scripture, conviction, or calling, He is planting something that carries its own power to grow.

You Are Not Starting Empty

One of the most subtle lies believers carry is the idea that they are spiritually lacking—that they need something more before they can truly grow.

But Scripture gently tells a different story.

“His divine power has given us everything we need for a godly life through our knowledge of him…” — 2 Peter 1:3 (NIV)

The apostle Peter wrote this to early Christians navigating pressure, uncertainty, and spiritual opposition. His message was clear: You are not unequipped. Through Christ, God has already provided what is necessary for transformation.

This doesn’t mean growth happens instantly. But it does mean growth doesn’t begin with striving; it begins with recognizing what has already been planted within you.

There is a seed in your life right now: a truth you’ve heard, Scripture that has stayed with you, or a desire to know God more deeply. None of that is accidental. That is God sowing into you.

Growth Is Not About Adding; It’s About Cultivating

We often approach spiritual growth as if cultivating a garden—seeking more knowledge, discipline, or effort as if adding new seeds. While these have value, they are not the starting point.

Jesus’ parable shifts the focus by comparing spiritual growth to cultivation. The power is not in the sower’s striving but in how well the ground—your heart—receives, protects, and nourishes the seed. The quality of cultivation, not just the quantity of effort, determines the outcome.

“I planted the seed, Apollos watered it, but God has been making it grow.”
— 1 Corinthians 3:6 (NIV)

Here, the apostle Paul addresses division within the early church. People were elevating leaders, assuming growth came from human effort. Paul redirects them: growth ultimately comes from God.

This verse brings balance. Yes, we cultivate, but God causes the increase. Spiritual maturity is not manufactured; it is nurtured.

So instead of asking, “What am I missing?”

A better question becomes: “Am I tending what God has already given me?”

The Seed Carries More Than You Can See

A seed doesn’t look impressive. It’s small, often overlooked, and easy to dismiss. Yet within it is the blueprint for something far greater.

Jesus highlights this again:

“Though it is the smallest of all seeds, yet when it grows, it is the largest of garden plants…” — Matthew 13:32 (NIV)

In context, Jesus was describing the Kingdom of God—how it begins quietly but expands beyond expectation. To their audience, this challenged their assumptions. They were looking for something immediate and visible, but God was working in ways that required trust.

The same is true in your life.

What feels small right now—a verse you’re holding onto, a habit you’re trying to build, a quiet conviction in your heart—may not look like much. But it carries the potential for transformation, not just for you, but for others.

Growth often starts unseen. Roots form before fruit appears.

God Is Still Involved in the Process

It’s important to understand this: recognizing the seed within you does not mean God steps back. He remains actively involved, guiding, strengthening, and sustaining.

“…he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.” — Philippians 1:6 (NIV)

Paul wrote this while imprisoned, encouraging believers who were facing uncertainty. His confidence wasn’t in their ability; it was in God’s faithfulness.

God doesn’t just plant the seed. He stays committed to its growth.

So if you feel like you’re in a slow season, or a hidden one, it doesn’t mean nothing is happening. It may mean something deeper is taking root.

A Gentle Invitation to Reflect

Take a moment and ask yourself:

What has God already placed in my life that I may be overlooking?

What truth have I heard but not fully embraced?

Where might God be inviting me to nurture, rather than search?

Spiritual growth feels less overwhelming when you realize you start with what God has already given you.

“Therefore, since we have such a hope, we are very bold.” — 2 Corinthians 3:12 (NIV)

As we come to the close of our Identity in Christ series this May, we’ve taken a powerful journey together. We began by discovering what it means to move from an orphan mindset into being a child of God. We then embraced the truth that we are redeemed and restored, fully forgiven through Christ’s finished work. From there, we explored how we are chosen with purpose and uniquely designed by God, and last week we were reminded that we are secure in God’s love, free from the fear of rejection.

Each of these truths builds upon the others. Identity leads to freedom. Freedom leads to purpose. Purpose is sustained by love.

And now, we arrive at the final step: living confidently in faith.

From Knowing to Living

It’s one thing to understand who you are in Christ; it’s another to live like it.

Many believers know the right truths but still hesitate to step out in faith. We second-guess ourselves. We hold back. We wait until we feel “ready.”

But confidence in faith doesn’t come from having everything figured out. It comes from trusting the One who does.

Hebrews 11:1 (NIV) defines faith as “confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see.” Written to early Christians facing uncertainty and pressure, this verse reminds us that faith is not based on visible outcomes but on trust in God’s promises.

Confidence Rooted in Christ

True confidence is not self-confidence—it is Christ-confidence.

It’s not about believing in your own strength, abilities, or perfection. It’s about believing that God is with you, working through you, and guiding you.

Philippians 1:6 (NIV) says, “He who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion…” Paul wrote this to reassure believers that God’s work in their lives is ongoing and faithful.

This means you don’t have to fear failure.

You don’t have to wait until you feel perfect.

You don’t have to rely on your own strength.

Your confidence comes from knowing that God is already at work within you.

Courage Over Comfort

Living confidently in faith often requires stepping outside of what feels safe.

Comfort keeps you where things are predictable. Faith calls you forward into the unknown.

In Joshua 1:9 (NIV), God tells Joshua, “Be strong and courageous… for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.” Joshua was stepping into leadership after Mosesa’s moment filled with uncertainty. Yet God didn’t promise ease—He promised presence.

That same promise is for you.

Courage is not the absence of fear; it’s the decision to move forward despite it.

Faith in Everyday Life

Living boldly in faith doesn’t always mean making dramatic, life-altering decisions. Often, it shows up in small, consistent ways.

It looks like:

• Speaking up when it matters

• Trusting God in uncertain seasons

• Taking a step forward even when you don’t feel fully ready

• Choosing obedience over hesitation

James 2:17 (NIV) reminds us, “Faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead.” In its context, James is challenging believers to move beyond passive belief into active faith.

Faith is not just something you believe, it’s something you live.

Letting Go of Fear

Fear will always try to hold you back from stepping into purpose, from trusting God fully, from living boldly.

But you are not the same person you were at the beginning of this journey.

You are:

• A child of God

• Redeemed and restored

• Chosen with purpose

• Secure in His love

And because of that, you can move forward with confidence.

2 Timothy 1:7 (NIV) says, “For the Spirit God gave us does not make us timid, but gives us power, love and self-discipline.” Paul wrote this to encourage Timothy to step boldly into his calling despite fear.

That same Spirit lives in you.

Stepping Forward in Faith

So what does this look like for you right now?

Maybe it’s:

• Taking a step toward a calling you’ve been hesitant to pursue

• Letting go of fear that’s been holding you back

• Trusting God in an area where you’ve been uncertain

You don’t need to have all the answers.

You don’t need perfect clarity.

You just need the willingness to take the next step.

Faith grows as you move.

Living the Life You’ve Been Called To

This is the heart of it all.

You were never meant to just understand your identity; you were meant to live it.

To walk confidently.

To trust deeply.

To live boldly.

Not because of who you are alone, but because of who Christ is in you.

Then we embraced the truth that we are redeemed and restored, fully forgiven through Christ’s finished work. Last week, we explored how we are chosen with purpose, uniquely designed by God to walk confidently in His plan.

If you haven’t had a chance to read those earlier articles, I encourage you to revisit them. Each one builds on the next, helping you not just understand your identity—but truly live from it.

This week, we take a deeper step into something many quietly struggle with: the fear of rejection. And we anchor ourselves in this truth: you are secure in God’s love.

The Hidden Fear We Carry

Rejection is one of the most universal human experiences. It shows up in relationships, careers, friendships, and even in how we view ourselves. And over time, it can shape how we approach God.

We may not say it out loud, but deep down we wonder:

What if I’m not enough?

What if I mess up too much?

What if God pulls away from me?

These thoughts don’t come from truth—they come from fear.

But Scripture speaks clearly into this.

Romans 8:38–39 (NIV) declares, “For I am convinced that neither death nor life… nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.”

Paul wrote this to believers facing real persecution and uncertainty. Yet his message was unwavering: nothing, absolutely nothing, can separate you from God’s love.

Love That Doesn’t Waver

Human love, as meaningful as it can be, is often conditional. It can change based on circumstances, emotions, or expectations. That’s why many of us carry a fear that love can be withdrawn.

But God’s love is not like that.

Malachi 3:6 (NIV) says, “I the Lord do not change.” In its historical context, God is reassuring Israel of His faithfulness despite their inconsistency. His character remains steady, even when ours does not.

This means His love is not based on your performance.

It’s not strengthened by your good days.

And it’s not weakened by your struggles.

God’s love is constant because He is constant.

Perfect Love Casts Out Fear

Fear and love cannot coexist in the same space when love is complete.

1 John 4:18 (NIV) tells us, “There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment.” Written to early believers navigating uncertainty, John emphasizes that God’s love removes the need to fear rejection or judgment.

If you are in Christ, you are not waiting to be accepted; you already are.

The fear of rejection often comes from expecting punishment or withdrawal. But God’s love doesn’t operate that way. His love covers, restores, and remains.

You Are Fully Accepted

One of the most powerful truths in Scripture is this: you are not tolerated by God, you are accepted.

Ephesians 1:6 (NIV) says we are “accepted in the Beloved.” In its original context, this means being fully welcomed and favored through Christ.

Let that sink in.

You are not on probation.

You are barely holding your place.

You are fully embraced as His own.

This truth changes how you approach everything:

• You don’t have to fear being rejected.

• You don’t have to strive for approval.

• You can rest in a relationship.

Living Secure, Not Striving

When you are secure in God’s love, your life begins to shift in subtle but powerful ways.

You stop overthinking every mistake.

You stop seeking validation from others to fill what God has already fulfilled.

You begin to show up with confidence, not because you’re perfect, but because you’re loved.

This security doesn’t make you passive; it makes you steady.

It allows you to love others more freely, take healthy risks, and walk in peace even when circumstances are uncertain.

Ask yourself:

Where have I been fearing rejection?

Where have I been seeking approval instead of resting in God’s love?

Let this be the moment you bring those fears to Him.

Anchored in What Cannot Change

Feelings may fluctuate. Circumstances may shift. People may come and go.

But God’s love remains.

When doubts arise, return to truth.

When fear whispers, respond with Scripture.

When insecurity tries to take hold, remind yourself: I am secure in God’s love.

This is not just something to believe, it’s something to live from.

Living It Out:

This week, when you feel fear or insecurity rise, pause and remind yourself of one truth: Nothing can separate me from God’s love. Let that truth guide your thoughts and actions.

Closing Prayer:

Father, thank You for loving me with a love that never changes. Help me to release every fear of rejection and rest fully in the security of Your presence. Amen.

Over the past two weeks, we’ve been building a powerful foundation in our Identity in Christ series. First, we explored what it means to move from an orphan mindset into the security of being a child of God. Then, last week, we stepped into the freedom of being redeemed and restored, learning that Christ’s finished work has fully removed our guilt and shame.

If you haven’t had a chance to read those articles yet, I encourage you to go back and spend time with them. They lay the groundwork for what we’re discovering together this month, because before you can fully embrace your purpose, you must first understand your identity and your freedom.

Now, we move forward into this week’s truth: you are not only forgiven—you are chosen with purpose.

Chosen, Not Random

In a world that often feels chaotic and uncertain, it’s easy to wonder if our lives are simply a series of random events. But Scripture tells a very different story.

Ephesians 2:10 (NIV) reminds us that we are God’s “handiwork,” or in some translations, His “masterpiece.” In its original Greek context, the word used here is poiēma, meaning something intentionally created with skill and purpose.

That means your life is not accidental.

Your gifts are not random.

Your story is not wasted.

God’s choice of you was not an afterthought; it was intentional from the beginning.

Freedom Fuels Purpose

Before we can truly walk in purpose, we must first be free.

Many people struggle to step into what God has called them to do because they’re still weighed down by what they believe disqualifies them. Shame whispers, You’re not ready. You’re not worthy. You’ve messed up too much.

But last week’s truth still stands: you are redeemed and restored.

2 Timothy 1:9 (NIV) says, “He has saved us and called us to a holy life, not because of anything we have done but because of his own purpose and grace.” Written during a time when Timothy faced fear and pressure, Paul reminds him that calling is rooted in grace, not performance.

Your purpose is not something you earn; it’s something you step into.

Designed on Purpose, For a Purpose

God doesn’t just save us from something; He calls us to something.

Jeremiah 29:11 (NIV) declares, “For I know the plans I have for you… plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” Originally written to the Israelites in exile, this promise reminded them that even in uncertain seasons, God’s plans remained intact.

The same is true for you.

Even if your journey hasn’t looked how you expected…

Even if you’ve taken detours or faced setbacks…

God’s purpose for your life has not been canceled.

Breaking Free from Comparison

One of the greatest obstacles to embracing purpose is comparison.

We look at others and think:

• They’re further ahead.

• They’re more gifted

• They’re more qualified.

But comparison distorts calling.

Galatians 1:15 (NIV) says, “But when God, who set me apart from my mother’s womb and called me by his grace…” Paul, who once persecuted Christians, was uniquely chosen for a specific purpose. His past didn’t disqualify him; it became part of his testimony.

Your calling is not meant to look like someone else’s.

God didn’t create a duplicate. He created you.

Walking Confidently in Your Calling

Living with purpose doesn’t mean having every step figured out; it means trusting the One who does.

When you embrace your identity and your redemption, confidence begins to grow, not in yourself, but in God’s design.

This changes how you approach life:

• You stop waiting for perfection before taking action.

• You stop doubting whether you’re “enough.”

• You start showing up with faith, not fear.

Because the truth is, God doesn’t call the qualified—He qualifies the called.

And your willingness matters more than your perfection.

Stepping Into What God Has Already Prepared

Purpose is not something you have to chase endlessly; it’s something you walk into daily.

Sometimes it looks like:

• Showing integrity in your work

• Encouraging someone who needs hope

• Taking a step of faith when it feels uncomfortable

Big or small, every step matters.

Ask yourself:

Where is God inviting me to trust Him more?

What step have I been hesitant to take?

You don’t need the full picture; you just need the next step.

Living Chosen, Living On Purpose

As we continue this journey, remember:

You are a child of God.

You are redeemed and restored.

And now, you are chosen with purpose.

Let that truth reshape how you see yourself, not as someone trying to figure it all out alone, but as someone intentionally designed by God.

Last week, we began this journey by exploring what it means to move from an orphan mindset into the secure identity of being a child of God. We reflected on belonging to the truth that we are chosen, adopted, and deeply loved by our Heavenly Father. That foundation matters because identity shapes everything else.

But once we begin to understand that we belong, another question often rises quietly within us: Can I truly be free from my past?

As we continue our Identity in Christ series this May, today’s message, “Redeemed and Restored,**”**invites us to step into a deeper truth: not only are you God’s child, but you are also fully forgiven, completely redeemed, and no longer defined by shame.

Before we go further, let’s pause to honor something meaningful. Today is Mother’s Day. To every mother reading this, thank you for your love, your sacrifices, and your quiet strength. You reflect the nurturing heart of God in powerful ways. May you feel seen, appreciated, and deeply loved today.

The Weight We Were Never Meant to Carry

Many believers carry something heavy long after they’ve come to faith in shame. Not just guilt for what we’ve done, but a lingering belief that something is still wrong with us.

We may know we’re forgiven, but we don’t always feel free.

In Paul’s letter to the Ephesians, he writes during a time when believers were surrounded by systems of performance and religious striving. Yet he makes a bold declaration in *Ephesians 1:7 (NIV)*that redemption and forgiveness are already secured through Christ. Redemption, in its original context, referred to the release of a captive through payment. It’s not partial freedom, it’s complete release.

That means whatever has held you captive, regret, mistakes, past decisions, has already been paid for in full.

The Power of Christ’s Finished Work

One of the most profound moments in Scripture is found in John 19:30 (NIV) when Jesus declares, “It is finished.” These were not words of defeat; they were words of completion.

In the historical context of the crucifixion, this phrase carried the meaning of a debt fully paid. Nothing left outstanding. No balance remaining.

Yet many of us live as if there’s still something owed.

We try to make up for our past. We overcompensate. We strive to prove we’ve changed. But the cross doesn’t ask you to repay what Jesus has already completed.

Colossians 2:13–14 (NIV) reinforces this truth: “He forgave us all our sins, having canceled the charge of our legal indebtedness… he has taken it away, nailing it to the cross.” Written to a church influenced by legalism, Paul reminds them that the record of wrongdoing is not just covered, but removed.

You are not a work in progress, trying to earn forgiveness. You are forgiven—and now learning to live from that place.

Letting Go of Shame

Shame has a way of rewriting our identity. It whispers, That’s who you are. But Scripture tells a different story.

Romans 8:1 (NIV) declares, “Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.” In its original context, this was a radical statement. Condemnation meant a final verdict of guilt, but Paul announces that in Christ, that verdict no longer stands.

Shame may remind you of your past, but God is not holding it against you.

This doesn’t mean we ignore sin, but it means we no longer carry its weight as our identity.

And perhaps one of the most beautiful images of restoration is found in Psalm 103:12 (NIV): “As far as the east is from the west, so far has he removed our transgressions from us.” In Hebrew poetry, this phrase emphasizes infinite distance; there is no point where east meets west. That’s how completely God separates you from your past.

Living Restored, Not Remembering the Old

Freedom is not just about being forgiven; it’s about being restored.

Restoration means something is brought back to its intended purpose. In Christ, you are not just cleansed, you are renewed.

This truth begins to reshape how you live:

• You stop replaying past mistakes.

• You stop defining yourself by old labels.

• You begin to walk in confidence, not condemnation.

But this shift doesn’t happen automatically; it requires surrender.

Ask yourself honestly:

Where am I still holding onto what God has already released?

Where am I still trying to pay for what Jesus already finished?

Let this be the moment you release it.

Not because you’ve earned it, but because He already secured it.

Embracing the Freedom You’ve Been Given

Living redeemed doesn’t mean you’ll never remember your past; it means your past no longer has authority over your present.

When shame tries to return, you answer it with truth. When guilt resurfaces, you return to grace.

This week, instead of striving to be better, choose to believe something deeper: I am already forgiven.

Let that truth shape how you pray, how you think, and how you see yourself.

Take a few minutes this week to write down something you’ve been holding on to, guilt, regret, or shame, and surrender it to God in prayer. Then, intentionally replace it with a Scripture that reminds you of your forgiveness.
